Veelgestelde vragen

Quick answers.

Why does my 1 TB hard drive show as 931 GB?

Drive vendors use decimal terabytes (10¹² bytes) but operating systems show binary (2⁴⁰ bytes, properly called TiB). 1 TB = 0.909 TiB.

What's the difference between MB and MiB?

1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes (decimal). 1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes (binary). They differ by about 5%, growing with every prefix.

How many bits in a byte?

Almost always 8. The convention is so universal that 'octet' (= 8 bits) is sometimes used in network specs to be unambiguous.

Bytes to gigabytes — how?

Divide by 1,000,000,000 for decimal GB or by 1,073,741,824 for binary GiB. Or type your value and pick the units.

Is the converter free?

Yes — free, no ads, runs in your browser.
